People are often concerned about the rapid rise in sea levels, which threatens the lives of millions in major coastal cities—often large commercial centers. However, alongside the issue of rising sea levels, another aspect that is often overlooked is that coastal cities are “sinking” down.
This phenomenon, known as localized land subsidence, occurs when underground materials, such as soil, rock, or even artificial structures, are compacted or collapse, causing the surface above to sink. This can exacerbate the effects of rising sea levels (which currently averages 3.7 mm per year).
