Italy Unveils Europe’s First Solar-Powered Train, Reports ANSA
The solar panels mounted on the roof of the train do not power the train itself, but they provide energy for the air conditioning, lighting, and safety systems onboard.
Italian Environment Minister Altero Matteoli stated that the first 10 prototype trains will pave the way for significant advancements in the future.
Roberto Testore, the CEO of Italy’s Trenitalia, mentioned that the company is heavily investing to modernize and enhance the safety of its fleet. He noted that the number of train accidents has halved over the past eight years.
Currently, solar panels are used to partially power trains in Japan. A smaller solar-powered railway is also operational in Wales.
