The French National Health Insurance Fund reported that in 2004, more than 25,000 employees suffered from musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), an increase of 2,000 from 2003, accounting for nearly 70% of occupational disease cases registered with the insurance fund.
For over a decade, the number of people affected by MSDs in France has been rising by an average of 20% each year. So far, this condition primarily affects those working in industry. However, with the trend of working mainly on computers, an increasing number of indirect workers, such as office employees, are also experiencing these disorders.
According to research, in 2003, 3-4% of those with MSDs were attributed to excessive computer use. Researchers believe that the main cause is poor posture while working on computers. The movement of the head when shifting focus between printed documents and the screen also impacts the shoulder and neck joints.
Moreover, improper use of keyboards and mice contributes to MSDs, but unfortunately, many people still only recognize that extensive computer use leads to eye strain.
