Melon bread, known as “melonpan,” is one of the popular pastries in Japan. It gets its name from its appearance, which resembles a melon. This treat is a favorite among many Japanese people and foreign tourists alike.
However, it doesn’t stop at just being a food item; recently, melonpan has inspired a new version in the form of a face mask called Mask Pan. Drawing inspiration from the melonpan, it’s no surprise that the mask looks just like the pastry. The mask has a diameter of 12 cm.

Indeed, this face mask is made from real melon bread and is contributed by the specialty melon shop “Melon de Melon.”
This is an innovative product from Goku no Kimochi The Labo, the product division of the company that operates the Goku no Kimochi head massage shops in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and New York.

According to a press release, this is the world’s first edible face mask, inspired by a group of university students aged 19 to 20, who love melon bread and have always dreamed of smelling it.
Goku no Kimochi explains that they created these face masks “with the hope that we have something fun to showcase in the future. They want to create joyful memories for everyone.”
However, that doesn’t mean the researchers overlooked safety issues.

A performance test conducted in April by the Unitika Textileech Laboratory, a third-party testing organization, reported that the Mask Pan face mask performs as well as or better than commercially available masks in visual droplet prevention tests.
