A man has devised a way to use hundreds of tons of discarded oyster shells to generate an income of $6 million a year.
The oyster shells are being researched to produce a new type of thermal fabric.
Growing up on the west coast of Taiwan, Eddie Wang witnessed discarded oyster shells everywhere. Instead of viewing them as waste, some of his neighbors burned the shells and used them as wall coverings.
The home, with its natural “thermal insulating walls”, became warm in the winter and cool in the summer.
This idea inspired Wang as he collaborated with a research institute to experiment with producing fabric from oyster shell waste.
Today, Wang transforms nearly 100 tons of shells each year into a new type of thermal fabric, known as “seawool.”
This man’s initiative and effort are a clear testament to the saying: “Turning trash into treasure.”
