In a town in New Jersey, USA, a bizarre incident occurred: a bird dropped a fish it had caught while flying, leading to a power outage affecting part of the town.
“A large area in Sayreville has lost power,” reported the New Jersey Power and Light Center, confirming that a fish was found on a transformer. “This fish actually destroyed the transformer, impacting 2,100 people in Sayreville for two hours!”, the Sayreville Police Department posted on their official Facebook page.
The incident happened on Saturday (August 12). According to police speculation, some type of bird caught a fish and dropped it onto a transformer, causing the damage. Sayreville is located approximately 30 miles south of New York City, near the Raritan Bay and the Raritan River.
The fish and the “culprit” that caused a power outage affecting over 2,100 people in the town.
“The theory is that a bird dropped it,” Captain James Novak of the Sayreville Police Department shared with NJ Advance Media. “Ironically, it fell right in the spot and destroyed the transformer.” Police suspect the culprit was a sea hawk.
“The suspect was last seen flying south. If you see ‘him’, do not attempt to apprehend. While we do not believe he is armed, he can still be very dangerous.”
As noted, unexpected interventions from animals often lead to power outages, according to blog posts from utility companies, including incidents caused by beavers and black squirrels gnawing on insulation or damaging other infrastructure.
