On July 24, the Ho Chi Minh City Forest Protection Department handed over two rare orangutans to the Wildlife Rescue Organization (WAR) for transportation back to their native Indonesia.
Previously, these two orangutans were hunted and trafficked into Vietnam, where they were seized by the forest protection forces at the Thanh Canh restaurant in Binh Duong. This primate species is native only to Borneo and Sumatra (Indonesia) and is listed in the Red Book of endangered species. At the handover ceremony, the Borneo Orangutan Conservation Organization praised the timely actions and close cooperation of the Vietnamese forest rangers in implementing the international CITES convention for the conservation of endangered wildlife.
