Notably, at the church in the village of Helf (an autonomous community in Andalusia), bones have been discovered, including, as expected, the remains of Isabel Columbus de Toledo, the explorer’s granddaughter.
The researchers aim to establish his origins. According to the most popular version, Columbus is said to be Genoese, but some experts and historians question this hypothesis. Researcher Carmen Garcia believes that he was actually a nobleman from Galicia, Spain named Pedro Alvarez de Sotomayor.
Sputnik reported that in September 2021, experts conducted an excavation at one of the churches in Pontgeonra. There, they hoped to find the remains of the mother and grandfather of Pedro Alvarez de Sotomayor. Now, researchers want to obtain DNA from Columbus’s granddaughter to compare with the findings discovered in Pontnticra.
May 20, 2021, marked the 515th anniversary of the death of the famous explorer. Columbus led expeditions on the ships “Santa Maria,” “Pinta,” and “Nina” (1492-1493), during which a new part of the world was discovered on October 12, 1492, later known as America. He organized and led three more expeditions to the coasts of America (1493-1504).
