The electric flying taxi with 5 seats and hydrofoils from SeaBubbles has begun operating commercial passenger services on Lake Annecy.
SeaBubbles is the first electric hydrofoil boat licensed for passenger transport in France. Initially launched in 2017 as an electric hydrofoil water taxi in a pilot program in Paris, and starting trial operations in 2018, SeaBubbles has now achieved its goal of commencing commercial passenger services, as reported by Design Boom.

The vehicle welcomed its first passengers at the port in Veyrier-du-Lac and ran to Annecy les Marquisats in early July 2023. From July 1 to August 31, 2023, the Grand Annecy association and SeaBubbles Mobility Solutions will collaborate to operate this zero-emission electric hydrofoil as a public transport option in the city.
Operating 8 hours a day over the two-month period, SeaBubbles’ flying taxi allows passengers to enjoy the scenic views of the water without noise and pollution. This sustainable water transport initiative aims to reduce 100 tons of CO2 emissions on Lake Annecy while also alleviating congestion on the shores. Passengers can admire the views thanks to the design of doors and windows that can be opened at various angles. The doors can slide open sideways before being pushed upwards, and the overhead canopy can be folded back to let in more wind and natural light, ensuring an unobstructed view for passengers.
The company has not disclosed many technical specifications of the vehicle. The SeaBubbles model seats 4 to 5 people and operates 100% on battery power, traveling at a cruising speed of 22 km/h (approximately 13.7 mph). It takes just 3 seconds to lift off the water, and the boat, measuring 5 x 2.5 meters, utilizes an electric propulsion system and hydrofoils, significantly reducing drag and improving speed. This vehicle is ideal for operating in areas that require low speed and minimal disturbance on the water surface.
After introducing SeaBubbles, the company is developing SmartBubbles, a larger version of the electric flying taxi. The next model will still utilize hydrofoils but will feature a retractable design and accommodate 8 to 12 people. SmartBubbles is currently being tested and evaluated on Lake Annecy. The second SeaBubbles model is also nearing completion with several upgrades that will enable it to fully charge in just 4 minutes.
