Members of the Terrigal Ocean Swimmers club recorded the sight of a juvenile coral crab riding on the body of a blubber jellyfish in the waters of New South Wales, Australia.
Professor Shane Ahyong, head of the marine invertebrate department at the Australian Museum, noted that both the coral crab and blubber jellyfish are common species in the area.
According to Professor Ahyong, these crabs are known as “frequent hitchhikers on jellyfish.” He also mentioned that clinging to the jellyfish allows the crabs to rest and potentially catch small fish swimming near the jellyfish.
