Carl Nicholson, a resident of Everglades City, captured footage of an alligator nicknamed Big Boy dragging a snake carcass on July 24 and shared it on social media platform Facebook, according to Newsweek. The alligator was seen pushing the snake carcass down the canal towards the water’s edge. Nicholson was unsure whether the alligator killed the snake or found it dead somewhere.
American alligators inhabit coastal wetlands throughout the southeastern United States, ranging from Florida to North Carolina and eastern Texas, according to the National Wildlife Federation. Males can grow over 12 feet long and weigh 1,000 pounds, while females are typically slightly smaller. One reason Burmese pythons thrive in Florida is the lack of natural predators. However, American alligators often prey on pythons. The interactions between these two large predators do not always yield the same outcome, as sometimes Burmese pythons also consume alligators.
