Earth Hour is an annual event celebrated worldwide. However, not everyone knows the significance of the activities that take place on this day.
What is Earth Hour?
Earth Hour (EH), initiated by WWF – the World Wildlife Fund, is a global initiative aimed at raising awareness about energy conservation and climate change.
This initiative calls on individuals and businesses around the world to turn off their lights for one hour on the last Saturday of March every year.
The goal of the campaign is to affirm that each individual action, when multiplied on a large scale, can help improve our living environment.
The event began in Sydney, Australia in 2007 when 2 million people participated by turning off their lights. By 2008, over 50 million people globally joined in.
The event began in Sydney, Australia in 2007.
The Significance of Earth Hour
The significance of Earth Hour in our country: every year on the last Saturday of March at 8:30 PM, the entire nation will turn off lights and light candles to demonstrate energy conservation. This candle-lighting activity takes place not only in Vietnam but also in various countries in the region and around the world.
Think back to how many times we have turned on too many lights for a single room. How often have we turned on the television without paying attention to what it was showing? How many times have we used air conditioning when we could simply open a window and let in fresh air? From this, we should reconsider our habits and compare the results.
Thus, not only should we participate in Earth Hour, but let’s also do more for this planet together. Significant, positive changes often start from small actions, such as turning off an extra light in a room or reducing the use of plastic bags while shopping.
When is Earth Hour 2023?
Earth Hour this year will take place from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM on Saturday, March 25, 2023.
The Earth Hour 2023 campaign is launched by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) with the theme “The Biggest Hour for Earth” – “The Important Moment for Earth”.
The event of turning off the lights for one hour in support of Earth Hour 2023 will take place from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM on Saturday, March 25, 2023.
The significance of this message emphasizes that this is the time we need to change, to push harder to ensure global biodiversity goals.
At the same time, it calls on all individuals and communities to act to adapt and change the course of climate change, aiming towards nature recovery and biodiversity within this decade, countering habitat degradation. This is a prerequisite for enhancing health, the rich diversity of species, populations, and ecosystems.
