A new internal virus spreading through Yahoo! Messenger (YM) emerged yesterday, September 12, causing chaos among online users.
If you are using YM (online), victims will receive links from their friends’ YM accounts containing the message: Nothing is impossible! Because impossible itself is IM possible! http://viet8x.evonet.ro; Chan doi chang biet lam gi http://viet8x.evonet.ro, Hiiiiiiiiii…….. quanntk.com…
For infected accounts that are currently online, the aforementioned links may even be posted in their status messages.
As of last night, the Cyber Security Center of Hanoi University of Science and Technology (BKIS) had not yet compiled the number of infected computers. However, BKIS estimates that thousands of computers nationwide have been infected.
Mr. Nguyễn Tử Quảng, the center’s director, stated that similar to previous internal viruses spread through the YM system, this virus propagates through accounts in the address book of infected YM accounts, leading to rapid dissemination. Once it infects a victim’s computer, the virus seeks out passwords and sends them back to the hacker.
Mr. Quảng confirmed that this virus was created using open-source software that Hải Anh, a student from National Economics University, used to spread the virus GaixinhYM on the YM system last April.
After being penalized, the perpetrator “gifted” this source code for free to hackers who have been writing and spreading successive YM viruses recently.
According to BKIS, approximately 7,000 computers among those infected through YM have had their information stolen over the past period. BKIS warns that if your computer is infected with this virus, you should immediately change all your passwords as they may have fallen into the hands of hackers.
Additionally, statistics show that 254,000 computers were infected with the RavMonE virus in August. This virus is particularly dangerous as it can autonomously seek out USB devices to spread itself.
