Italian farmers have created the world’s first sunflower oil-powered boat – a type of “biofuel” that can replace current polluting fuels.
This boat has been used to patrol Lake Como in northern Italy during an international conference on agriculture and food held in the town of Cernobbio.
Recent studies show that sunflower oil is less energy-intensive compared to conventional fuels, and its prices are very competitive.
According to Paolo Bedoni, president of the Coldiretti farmers’ association, this technology can be easily applied in small boats, agricultural machinery, small trucks, buses, and even cars.
It is estimated that a farmer can produce about 3,000 kg of sunflower seeds per hectare, which can yield approximately 1,300 kg of oil from those seeds. The selling price for each kg of sunflower oil is only around 50 cents, comparable to the price of diesel fuel.
