Research results published in the “International Journal of Cancer” (UK) on October 31 indicate that olive oil may prevent various diseases, including colorectal cancer, one of the most common and life-threatening illnesses.
A team of scientists from Ulster University (UK) conducted an experiment by cultivating cancer cells in a synthetic compound derived from pure olive oil, known as Phenola.
Through their research, they found that olive oil has the potential to help prevent colorectal cancer, as it contains a high amount of monounsaturated fats and antioxidants, which are components that can inhibit the development of colorectal cancer.
The scientists mentioned that in the near future, they will continue testing on animals to definitively confirm the cancer-preventive effects of olive oil.
Previously, another study also indicated that olive oil could serve as a remedy for headaches. Through experiments, researchers discovered that oleocanthal—the main component in olive oil—has effects similar to the pain-relieving drug ibuprofen, and it may reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease.
