The Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter on November 7 published the first close-up photographs of the H5N1 avian influenza virus taken by photographer and scientist Lennart Nilsson.
The images depict the H5N1 virus as blue spherical chains attempting to destroy pink cells (see images below).
These viral images were captured by Lennart Nilsson using a microscope, with samples provided by the World Health Organization, taken from a father and son from Hong Kong who died from the flu two years ago. Previously, Nilsson had requested to take samples from a laboratory in the United States but was denied.
Lennart Nilsson, 83, is a scientist at the Karolinska Institute located in Stockholm, Sweden. He gained fame for his photograph of human conception, published in the book “A Child Is Born,” released in 1965.
The photographs taken by Lennart Nilsson were published in the Dagens Nyheter newspaper on November 7
