On October 19th, Netscape launched the latest version of its browser, Netscape 8, which includes updated security patches.
The Netscape 8.0.4 version has been updated and fixes security vulnerabilities based on those found in the open-source Firefox browser by Mozilla. This means that Netscape has addressed all the vulnerabilities just like the recently released Firefox 1.0.7 version from last month.
The new version of the Netscape browser has patched a total of 9 security vulnerabilities, including an issue in the way the browser handles internationalized domain names that use international characters. Hackers could exploit this vulnerability to execute dangerous code, potentially taking control of users’ computers.
This is the fifth security update for Netscape 8 since the browser was first released in May of this year.
Netscape 8 is a “hybrid” browser. It utilizes Firefox’s Gecko rendering engine to display web pages. However, if a webpage does not display correctly, the browser will immediately switch to the Internet Explorer rendering engine.
