The Chinese media refers to the “Future Science Prize” as the “Nobel Prize of China.” This year, the award was given to two scientists from mainland China and one scientist from Hong Kong.
According to Global Times, on August 21, the 2022 Future Science Prize – a scientific award established by a group of Chinese scientists and entrepreneurs and dubbed the “Nobel Prize of China” – was awarded to three Chinese scholars for their achievements in scientific research.

The Life Science Prize, Physics Prize, and Mathematics and Computer Science Prize were awarded to scientists Li Wen Hui, Yang Xue Ming, and Mok Ngai Ming, respectively. Each received a prize of 1 million USD.
Mr. Li Wen Hui, a senior research fellow at the National Institute of Biological Sciences in China and a professor at Tsinghua University, received the award for his discovery of the sodium taurocholate cotransporting polypeptide – a functional receptor for hepatitis B and D virus infection in humans, which aids in the development of more effective drugs against these viruses.
Meanwhile, scientist Yang Xue Ming was awarded the Physics Prize for his work in developing a new cross-beam molecular device, which has led to breakthroughs in quantum resonance phenomena and geometric phase effects in chemical reactions.
The Mathematics and Computer Science Prize was awarded to Mr. Mok Ngai Ming from the University of Hong Kong. Mr. Mok developed a theory to solve a range of conjectures in the field of algebraic geometry.
The Future Science Prize was established in 2016 to recognize breakthroughs and innovations in science in China, awarded to scientists from mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan. To date, 27 scientists have received this award, according to Xinhua News Agency.
Chinese researchers believe that selecting and awarding scientists in this manner will play a positive role in encouraging innovation in basic science in China and igniting scientific enthusiasm among the youth.
