The Poppy belongs to the Papaveraceae family, and its seed pods contain opium latex, which can be addictive. Europeans refer to it as “corn poppy.”
Before blooming, the Poppy bud droops as if shy. When it opens, the two long petals fall off, revealing four thin, large petals and a delicate flower stem, showcasing a very charming appearance. In the breeze, it sways like a dancing butterfly. The flower has many stamens and a large pistil in its center, but it only lasts for about two days.
Poppies are often planted in flower gardens, creating the impression of a group of beautiful young women dancing in various poses. When introduced to China, gardeners immediately thought of the beautiful wife of the ancient warrior Xiang Yu, the famous Lady Yu, and thus named the Poppy “Yu Beauty” (beauty of the Yu clan).
