At 10 AM, the center of Typhoon No. 3 was located at approximately 19.1 degrees North latitude and 115.5 degrees East longitude, over the northern waters of the North East Sea, about 490 km east of Hainan Island (China).
The maximum wind speed near the typhoon center reached Category 16 (184-201 km/h), with gusts exceeding Category 17, moving westward at a speed of about 10 km/h.
Forecast for the typhoon’s development over the next 24 to 72 hours:
By around 10 AM on September 6, Typhoon No. 3 will be about 550 km from Quang Ninh.
Due to the impact of Typhoon No. 3: The North East Sea region will experience strong winds from Category 11-14, with areas near the typhoon center experiencing winds of Category 15-16, gusting above Category 17; the sea will be extremely rough.
From around noon on September 6, the eastern waters of the Gulf of Tonkin (including Bach Long Vi Island district) will see winds gradually increasing to Category 6-7.
From the night of September 6, the Gulf of Tonkin (including Bach Long Vi and Co To districts) will experience winds increasing to Category 8-9, later rising to Category 10-12, with areas near the typhoon center reaching Category 13-14, gusting at Category 17; the sea will be extremely turbulent.
On land: From early morning on September 7, coastal areas from Quang Ninh to Thanh Hoa will experience gradually increasing winds to Category 6-7, later rising to Category 8-9, with areas near the typhoon center reaching Category 10-12, gusting at Category 14; regions deep inland in the Northeast will see winds of Category 6-8, with gusts of Category 9-11.
Wave heights: The North East Sea region will have waves reaching heights of 7-9 meters, with areas near the typhoon center experiencing waves of 10-12 meters. The sea will be extremely turbulent.
From the afternoon of September 6, the Gulf of Tonkin (including Bach Long Vi and Co To districts) will see wave heights of 2-4 meters, later increasing to 3-5 meters, with areas near the typhoon center reaching 6-8 meters.
From early morning on September 7, the coastal waters from Quang Ninh to Thanh Hoa will experience waves of 2-3 meters, later increasing to 2-4 meters, with areas near the typhoon center reaching 3-5 meters.
Coastal areas from Thanh Hoa to Quang Ninh should be cautious of storm surges of 0.5-1.8 meters (during the afternoon and night of September 7) and water receding due to the storm of 0.5-1 meter (on the morning of September 7).
Areas for mooring boats, aquaculture, and coastal dikes in the mentioned danger zones are all at risk from strong winds, large waves, and storm surges/receding water.
Heavy rainfall: From the night of September 6 to the morning of September 9, the Northern and North Central regions may experience a period of heavy rain, with localized areas facing very heavy rain and thunderstorms, with total rainfall generally ranging from 100-350 mm, and some areas exceeding 500 mm.
Heavy rain may cause flooding in low-lying areas; flash flooding in small rivers and streams, and landslides on slopes.
Thunderstorms and whirlwinds: Due to the extensive circulation of the storm, there is a risk of thunderstorms, whirlwinds, and strong gusts both before and during the storm’s landfall.
A typhoon is a tropical cyclone with wind speeds of Category 8 or higher and may have gusts. Typhoons with maximum wind speeds of Category 10-11 are considered strong, those from Category 12-15 are very strong, and those Category 16 and above are classified as super typhoons.
Super typhoons have extremely destructive power, producing extremely strong waves capable of sinking large vessels.
Which provinces will be significantly affected by Typhoon Yagi?
Forecasts suggest that Typhoon No. 3 is likely to make direct landfall in the Northern provinces at a very strong intensity, particularly in the provinces and cities of: Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, Thai Binh, Nam Dinh, Ha Nam, Ninh Binh.
