Despite being injured, a young elephant bravely charged at a lion. This reckless action came at a very high price.
The clip was recorded by a tourist named Cynthia Mack at Hwange National Park.
Due to its inability to resist, the young elephant became a lavish meal for the pride of lions.
Specifically, while touring, the female tourist unexpectedly spotted a solitary young elephant limping towards a waterhole. Due to its injuries, the elephant inadvertently came into the sights of three young lions resting on a nearby mound.
Seeing one of the lions approach, the young elephant tried to intimidate the predator in hopes of escaping. However, all its efforts were in vain.
Minutes later, the other two lions quickly moved in to assist their companion in taking down the prey. Upon noticing the situation, a large male elephant rushed over to rescue the young elephant but quickly turned away as it realized its fellow could not get back up. As a result, the young elephant, unable to resist, became a lavish meal for the pride of lions.
Lions are supreme predators and top carnivores due to their abundant prey population. Their primary targets are other mammals, particularly medium to large-sized ungulates.
However, in the wild, lions very rarely hunt elephants for food. This is because elephants are not only the largest land animals but also possess many “weapons” that can be deadly to predators.
Yet, during the dry season, when food sources are scarce, lions are forced to take the risk of hunting these massive prey.
