Nalati Grassland stretches endlessly, surrounded by the lush green of pine forests and snow-capped mountains, making it a captivating destination for tourists.
The Nalati Nature Reserve, located within the Yili Grassland (Xinjiang), is one of the most beautiful grasslands in China. It spans approximately 150 km and sits at an elevation of 3,000 to 4,000 meters above sea level, earning the nickname “the sky-high plateau.” The landscape features many slopes and gentle hills, creating a stunning view.
In the Uygur language, Nalati means “the place where the sun first rises.” The water from large rivers ensures that the grasslands remain lush during the summer months. From June to September each year, wildflowers bloom on the hills, creating a breathtaking landscape.
Nalati Grassland in the summer.
Nalati Grassland has a history of over 3,000 years and has been home to the Kazakhstan ethnic minority throughout the ages. It is one of the famous tourist spots along the Silk Road. Here, visitors can enjoy the snow-capped mountains in spring and winter; admire the pine forests, hills, and vast grasslands in summer, which is also the peak tourist season. In autumn, many forests turn golden and red, creating a picturesque scene. Tourists can stay in Mongolian yurts, learn about the culture and lifestyle of nomadic people, or play and take photos with sheep on the grassland.
The horseback riding experience in Nalati delights many tourists and has become a trend on Chinese social media in recent years. The scenery of the valley, the smoke rising from the white yurts of the nomads, and the horse riders herding sheep create a unique charm in Nalati.
Visitors can reach Nalati National Forest Park by plane or car, and it’s essential to bring warm clothing, even in summer, due to the significant temperature difference between day and night in Nalati. First-time travelers should prepare bottled water, as the local water has a slightly brackish taste. Additionally, tourists are advised to be cautious if driving or riding horses in the area, as it’s easy to get lost due to the similar surrounding landscape.
